Filipino family faces the zombie apocalypse in Netflix’s “Outside”

Netflix is expanding its Southeast Asian slate with the upcoming Filipino film “Outside,” a chilling tale set against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse.

Written and directed by Carlo Ledesma, the movie is set to premiere on October 11, 2024. It follows a Filipino family desperately seeking refuge as the undead overrun the country. “Outside” marks a significant investment in original Filipino content, moving beyond licensed titles.

During Netflix’s APAC Showcase on June 13, Ledesma, when asked about the film’s most terrifying aspect, emphasized the importance of family.

“More than anything, Outside is a story about family,” he revealed, calling it his most personal project to date. “It explores how a family could fall apart, and it played out my worst fears as a father,” he added.

Netflix’s upcoming Southeast Asian slate promises to deliver a diverse range of content, spotlighting local creators from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Upcoming stories include spine-tingling horror, crime thrillers, thought-provoking science fiction anthologies, and intricate family dramas.

“Our creators can prioritize delivering the stories they’re best equipped to tell and are most passionate about,” said Minyoung Kim, VP of Content (APAC ex-India). “But it is on Netflix to make sure that those stories reach audiences not only within their home countries but also beyond domestic markets, enabling audiences around the world to discover the stories that they will love.”
